Medieval to Modern, the £800k Conversion of Dronfield Hall Barn
EP Consulting played a crucial role in the £800k redevelopment of Dronfield Hall Barn, a Grade 2* Listed Medieval building, transforming it into a vibrant community space. This 38-week Heritage Lottery Funded project preserved the barn’s original medieval timber frame, keeping it open for viewing while seamlessly integrating modern amenities.
Scope of Work
Our team of building services engineers delivered comprehensive mechanical and electrical (M&E) design services for this two-storey, open-plan conversion, which included conducting feasibility studies, providing budget costing, and developing detailed M&E design.
We produced a thermal model for the building to ensure optimal energy efficiency, created a BRUKL report and ensured compliance with Part L2 Building Regulations.
Challenges and Solutions
The project required careful balancing of historic preservation with modern functionality. Our team expertly integrated new systems while maintaining the barn’s historical integrity, including a rear extension for a heritage learning centre, archive, and café.
Results and Impact
The revitalised Dronfield Hall Barn now serves as a dynamic community hub, offering educational and recreational facilities while showcasing its medieval heritage. EP Consulting’s design expertise ensured a seamless blend of old and new, enhancing both functionality and historical value.
