Malt Cross Music Hall Expansion, an Award-Winning Heritage Project
EP Consulting played a pivotal role in the £1.7 million Heritage Lottery Funded expansion of the Malt Cross Music Hall in Nottingham. This award-winning project revitalised Nottingham's last Victorian saloon music hall dating back to 1877, and a 13th-century cave, transforming them into a vibrant hub for heritage, music, and arts.
Scope of Work
Our team conducted feasibility studies, budget costing, and provided comprehensive mechanical and electrical design for the refurbishment. The project involved converting two basement levels of a former Indian restaurant into various spaces, including a kitchen, equipment store, rehearsal studio, recording room, individual vocal rooms, meeting rooms, and a multifunctional heritage arts and crafts area.
Significant upgrades included installing a dumb waiter and a lift for improved accessibility, refurbishing existing toilet facilities, and converting the ground-floor kitchen into an office. The café/bar area also received updates with general refurbishments and decorations.
Challenges and Solutions
Preserving the historical integrity of the Grade II listed building while modernising its facilities was the primary challenge. EP Consulting addressed this by implementing innovative design solutions that respected the hall's heritage status while seamlessly integrating new mechanical and electrical systems, ensuring compliance with Part L2 Building Regulations.
Results and Impact
The refurbished Malt Cross Music Hall now serves as a dynamic cultural hub, offering state-of-the-art facilities for music, art, and community engagement. The project was honoured with the National RICS ‘Community Benefit’ award and the FBE East Midlands ‘Regeneration / Refurbishment’ award in 2015, highlighting EP Consulting’s commitment to heritage preservation and community revitalisation.
