Carlton Fire Station, a Model of Sustainable Design
EP Consulting successfully completed a £3.5m project for the Nottinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service at Carlton Fire Station. This two-story facility includes appliance bays, offices, a gymnasium, and training rooms. Notably, it is the UK’s first fire station to achieve a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating, setting a new benchmark in sustainable building.
Scope of Work
Our comprehensive services encompassed feasibility studies, budget costing, and both mechanical and electrical design. We implemented renewable energy solutions and managed EPC/BRUKL certifications, ensuring compliance with Part L2 Building Regulations. The project featured innovative gas absorption heat pumps for efficient heating and cooling, along with detailed SBEM calculations and thermal modelling to optimise energy use.
Challenges and Solutions
Balancing high sustainability standards with operational functionality posed a challenge. EP Consulting addressed this by integrating advanced renewable technologies and optimising energy efficiency, while ensuring that the fire station's operational needs were fully met.
Results and Impact
The Carlton Fire Station now stands as a premier example of sustainable design in the fire service sector. Our innovative approach has significantly enhanced the station’s operational efficiency and environmental performance, benefiting both the community and the environment.
