District Heating Scheme Installation at Police Headquarters
EP Consulting delivered essential M&E services for a £1.3m district heating scheme at Derbyshire Constabulary Headquarters in Ripley.
Scope of Work
Our team installed a 3MW gas-fired boiler plant and a 999kW biomass boiler plant within the central plant room. The biomass boiler, which uses organic materials as fuel, provides a sustainable alternative to conventional heating systems.
We also implemented a sophisticated Building Management System (BMS) to control the new boilers, pumps, and plate heat exchangers across the entire site. Additionally, we established a network of pre-insulated steel medium-pressure hot water pipes to efficiently distribute heat to various remote plant rooms serving individual buildings.
Challenges and Solutions
The project required comprehensive feasibility studies, budget costing, mechanical and electrical design, and the integration of renewable energy solutions. We produced a thermal model for the building to ensure optimal energy efficiency and created a BRUKL report.
Integrating the new biomass system with existing infrastructure presented a challenge, but our team successfully executed a seamless installation. The biomass boiler plant not only enhances energy efficiency but also reduces carbon emissions by using renewable resources.
Results and Impact
Completed in 20 weeks, the district heating scheme has significantly improved energy efficiency and sustainability at Derbyshire Constabulary HQ. The inclusion of the biomass boiler plant contributes to reduced operational costs and supports the environmental goals of the headquarters by lowering carbon emissions.
