University of Nottingham's £6m Institute of Mental Health

EP Consulting played a pivotal role in the £6m new build Institute of Mental Health at the University of Nottingham, providing comprehensive mechanical services detailed design and consultancy. This state-of-the-art facility incorporates a TermoDeck high thermal mass ventilation strategy to optimise energy efficiency and indoor climate control.

Scope of Work

Our team developed a full mechanical services design package, including low-pressure hot water (LPHW) heating, chilled water systems, domestic hot water, cold potable water, grey water distribution, tank cold water distribution, and gas services. We also designed supply and extract ventilation integrated through the concrete floor planks to utilise the building’s thermal mass.

Challenges and Solutions

The project required innovative solutions to meet stringent sustainability and efficiency standards. EP Consulting's design utilised TermoDeck technology, which leverages the thermal mass of the building structure to reduce energy consumption and enhance indoor comfort. Close collaboration with Benoy, the architect and project manager, ensured that all mechanical systems were seamlessly integrated and aligned with Part L2 Building Regulations.

Results and Impact

The Institute of Mental Health now boasts a cutting-edge facility designed for sustainability and optimal performance. The efficient mechanical systems, combined with low carbon and renewable energy solutions, have significantly reduced the building's environmental impact. EP Consulting’s expertise in BREEAM standards and advanced mechanical design has helped create a building that supports the University of Nottingham’s commitment to sustainability and innovation in mental health research and care.
