Transformation of Heanor Grammar School into Sustainable Civic Hub
Overview
We are proud to deliver full mechanical and electrical design services for the transformation of Heanor’s former Grammar School into a vibrant civic and business hub. Commissioned by Amber Valley Borough Council and supported by the Future High Streets Fund, this project gave new purpose to a disused Grade II listed building—combining sustainability, digital readiness and heritage conservation.
Scope of Work
Our team designed fully electric M&E systems, including an energy-efficient VRF heating and cooling system and air source heat pumps. Insulation upgrades enhanced the building’s energy performance, while smart wireless lighting was integrated using existing containment. Fibre-ready infrastructure was also installed to meet modern digital demands.
Challenges and Solutions
Delivering modern, energy-efficient solutions within a listed structure required a sensitive and collaborative approach. Our engineers worked closely with stakeholders to balance sustainability goals with conservation needs, ensuring every system was discreetly installed and future-proofed.
Results and Impact
Now a thriving hub for local enterprise and community use, Heanor Hub supports regeneration while preserving the town’s architectural legacy.
