Galleries of Justice, Revitalising Nottingham’s Historic Shire Hall
EP Consulting played a crucial role in the £6.2m transformation of Nottingham’s 18th Century Old Shire Hall courthouse and gaol, and the adjacent disused Police Station, into the engaging ‘Crime and Punishment’ interactive exhibition for the Lace Market Heritage Trust.
Scope of Work
Our team delivered extensive design services across two phases of the project. We managed feasibility studies, budget costing, mechanical and electrical design, and ensured compliance with Part L2 Building Regulations. Key tasks included designing and installing systems for display areas, tour zones, and artifact storage. We worked closely with interpretative designers, providing detailed design drawings, specifications, and site supervision to support the project's success.
Challenges and Solutions
Adapting these historic buildings into a modern museum presented unique challenges. EP Consulting integrated advanced mechanical and electrical systems while preserving the buildings' historical features. Our design solutions ensured optimal conditions for displays and artifacts, balancing modern functionality with heritage preservation.
Results and Impact
The Galleries of Justice now stand as a dynamic interactive museum that captivates visitors with the history of crime and punishment. EP Consulting’s design expertise has enhanced both the centre’s functionality and visitor experience. This project demonstrates our commitment to combining historical preservation with modern innovation, enriching Nottingham’s cultural landscape.
