Oakham Castle Restoration
EP Consulting played a key role in the £2.1m Heritage Lottery Funded restoration of the 12th Century Oakham Castle, transforming it into a cultural centre for Rutland. This project required meticulous planning to ensure that modern mechanical and electrical services were seamlessly integrated with the historic structure.
Scope of Work
Our comprehensive M&E consultancy services included feasibility studies, budget costing, and detailed mechanical and electrical design. We provided both external and internal lighting solutions, designed services for a new toilet block and storage facility, and carried out drainage and heating works. Additionally, we managed an exhibition fit out to highlight the Castle’s rich history. We produced a thermal model for the building, created a BRUKL report and ensured compliance with Part L2 Building Regulations.
Challenges and Solutions
Restoring a historical landmark while incorporating modern amenities was a significant challenge. EP Consulting’s solutions were designed to blend seamlessly with the ancient structure, ensuring the building’s historical integrity was preserved. We also focused on the future economic and environmental sustainability of the Castle.
Results and Impact
Completed in 40 weeks, the Oakham Castle restoration now functions as a cultural hub for Rutland, with thoughtfully designed modern amenities that complement its historical significance. This project exemplifies EP Consulting’s expertise in delivering sustainable, historically sensitive designs that enhance both functionality and heritage preservation.
