Making It! Discovery Centre. A £2.6m Educational and Interactive Centre

EP Consulting played a pivotal role in the £2.6m development of the Making It! Discovery Centre in Mansfield. This family-oriented educational and interactive centre was established in a renovated four-story disused brewery for the Making It! Industrial Heritage Trust.

Scope of Work

Our team provided a comprehensive mechanical and electrical (M&E) design package, including feasibility studies, budget costing, and detailed design services. We collaborated with exhibition and interpretative designers to deliver a range of systems: mains distribution, PA system, fire alarm, intruder alarm, a fully operational glass lift, communications systems, and electrical services for interactive exhibits. We produced a thermal model for the building, created a BRUKL report and ensured compliance with Part L2 Building Regulations.

Challenges and Solutions

Integrating modern M&E systems into the historic brewery required careful planning. EP Consulting’s design approach ensured the seamless integration of advanced systems, such as the PA system, fire and intruder alarms, and the glass lift, while preserving the building’s historical character. Our solutions balanced the need for modern functionality with respect for the existing structure.

The completion of the Making It! Discovery Centre has revitalised the former brewery into a dynamic educational space. Our design solutions have ensured the centre’s functionality, safety, and sustainability.
