New MRI Facility Underway at King’s Mill Hospital, Mansfield
Work has officially begun on a new purpose-built MRI facility at King’s Mill Hospital in Nottinghamshire, marking a significant step forward for diagnostic services across the region.
EP Consulting is proud to provide the mechanical and electrical design for the scheme, supporting Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust alongside Kier Construction and CPMG Architects. Funded by NHS England, the development will modernise imaging infrastructure and help meet growing demand for MRI scans.
The new facility will house two state-of-the-art MRI scanners, replacing ageing equipment and a temporary mobile unit currently in use. With existing scanners operating for extended hours every day, the project will increase capacity, improve resilience, and reduce waiting times for both inpatient and outpatient services. The design also allows space for a third scanner, ensuring the building can adapt to future healthcare needs.
Patient experience is central to the scheme. The building will feature ground floor access throughout, dementia-friendly signage, and a dedicated covered entrance linked to the main hospital via a new corridor. These design considerations will support accessibility, comfort, and efficient movement for patients and staff.
From an engineering perspective, MRI environments require highly coordinated building services design. Careful integration of mechanical and electrical systems is essential to ensure performance, safety, and compliance within a technically demanding healthcare setting.
The project is scheduled for completion this year and represents a vital investment in NHS infrastructure, improving access to faster, more reliable diagnosis for local communities.
