Derby Almshouses Refurbishment

Work is underway on the £3 million refurbishment of the Liversage Trust Almshouses in Derby, with EP Consulting delivering the mechanical and electrical (M&E) design for this significant heritage project.

The Grade II-listed almshouses, dating from 1836, are being sensitively redeveloped to meet modern living standards while preserving their historic character. The scheme will reduce the number of homes from 23 to 17, creating larger, more practical dwellings with improved layouts, upgraded kitchens and bathrooms, and enhanced accessibility.

As building services engineers, EP Consulting is supporting the integration of modern M&E systems within a listed building environment. The design approach focuses on safe, efficient operation while minimising impact on the original structure. Externally, conservation-led works will retain and restore the historic façades using traditional techniques.

Heritage refurbishment projects require a fabric-first, low-impact engineering approach, ensuring energy performance improvements and compliance with current standards without compromising architectural integrity.

Part-funded by Homes England alongside investment from The Liversage Trust, the scheme highlights the value of partnership in delivering sustainable upgrades to historic assets.

The project team includes The Liversage Trust, Allsopp Construction Ltd, Matthew Montague Architects, Addison Hunt, Alan Benfield, CD Northage & Co and SA Consulting.
